2010 marked the full takeover of the Oricon annual chart by idol groups. AKB48 and the Johnny's group Arashi collectively owned all ten spots on the year-end chart. The voting-mechanic tie-in sales strategy pioneered by AKB48 fundamentally changed how singles were sold in Japan, driving massive physical CD purchases even as digital music grew worldwide.
